You know this all too well, don’t you? Your nose is running, the urge to sneeze is accompanied by a cough, and you simply feel exhausted and washed out. And once a cold has caught up with us, fever as well as headaches and aching limbs often soon follow. Adults suffer from this an average of 2 to 5 times a year, and children even 4 to 8 times.
What to do:

1. Strengthen the immune system
The need for vital substances is particularly high during the cold season, in autumn and winter. Vitamins C and E as well as zinc contribute to activating the immune system. Taken in sufficient quantities, they make the body less vulnerable to infections. Zinc is found in particular in wholegrain products and milk. Citrus fruits and sea buckthorn, for example, are natural sources of vitamin C.

2. Rub in & inhale & take a bath
Which cold symptoms can be relieved with essential oils? In the case of a blocked nose, peppermint oil clears the airways and helps to relieve headaches associated with a cold. Other oils, such as eucalyptus oil, have a mucolytic effect and therefore make it easier to cough up mucus. Plant-based substances, such as chamomile extracts, also have an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect. They are particularly useful for sore throats associated with a cold.

3. Herbal tea for colds
After water, tea is the most important drink. Medicinal herbal teas are particularly suitable, as they also have a soothing effect and support the body from within. Medicinal herbal teas are specially designed for specific areas of use. They can provide valuable support during the healing process.

4. Treat fever & pain
Fever is not yet a cause for concern, but a normal defensive reaction by the body against cold viruses. It is therefore generally not necessary to treat an elevated temperature or moderate fever (up to 38 degrees Celsius) immediately.

5. Hoarseness & sore throats
Sore throats and hoarseness are often accompanied by other typical symptoms, such as an irritated throat, difficulty swallowing or a feeling of dryness. In most cases, sore throats are triggered by cold viruses and bacteria. The mucous membranes of the throat and pharynx then become inflamed and swell. In particularly severe cases, tonsillitis or laryngitis may also occur.

6. Coughs & bronchitis
An irritating or dry cough occurs during a cold when the mucous membranes become dry or irritated, for example due to inflammation of the bronchi. The result is a cough or a constant urge to clear your throat. Cough sweets and lozenges soothe the mucous membranes of the throat, while cough suppressants inhibit the cough reflex. In particular, they help you get a restful night’s sleep. Also inhale to moisten the mucous membranes. Keep the ambient air humid by placing a container filled with hot water in the bedroom or near your bed.
